What Greed Buys

People often accuse Socialists of wanting to take their property.  Why would I want the property of the egocentrically, thoughtlessly and destructively rich?  It would make me as crazy as they are.  They are the chief product of the cult of greed – in and of itself a disease.  The major complication of this deliberately induced infection is a long term and acute myopia.  The greedy persist in confusing the synthetic power of their money with the real power of the universe.  When the universe jumps up and bites them in the ass, and they realize that their money is after all just green paper, they are abjectly melancholy in their astonishment.  I have no sympathy for them and, not being a Christian, very little forgiveness.  I might forgive greed, maybe.  Willful stupidity, never!  What else can it be when people who must have it all – theirs, yours and what is left over – strive to avoid the knowledge that their own vicious, misery breeding action is prologue to their own inevitable nightmare?  It isn’t a difficult concept and was best articulated by Bernard Shaw, “In an ugly and unhappy world the richest of men can purchase nothing but ugliness and unhappiness.”
